Construction-Award-AnnouncedClose to 1000 construction professionals came together at the annual Celebrating Construction event on Friday 24th April at the ICC, Birmingham to celebrate excellence in construction throughout the West Midlands.

Winners of the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence (WMCCE) awards were announced by Joanne Malin of BBC WM and George Marsh, WMCCE Chairman.

The overall winner was Tony Hyde, Managing Director of Worcestershire- based Thomas Vale Construction who was honoured with the award for ‘Major Contribution to Excellence and Quality’.

Cundall won the award for ‘Leadership in People Development’ for their high level of employee engagement, strong employee buy in and high staff retention.

In the ‘Integration and Collaborative Working’ category the joint winners were VINCI Construction UK Ltd, and the Sandwell Decent Homes Partnership which is made up of eight partners (Sandwell Homes, Taylor Woodrow, Lovell Partnerships, Wates Living Space, Connaught Partnerships, Sandwell MBC Urban Design, Rider Levett Bucknall and Thomas Vale Construction). Both were commended for their achievements in establishing integrated and collaborative ways of working, adding value to the client’s business and enhancing the effectiveness of all levels of the supply chain.

‘Tarmac Ltd’ won the award for ‘Innovation’ for their TarmacDry Sustainable Drainage System which was proven to offer cost and time benefits to many construction projects.

The winner of the ‘Health and Safety’ award was GF Tomlinson Birmingham Ltd for the implementation and innovation in practices, procedures and policies that have contributed to improving health and safety in construction which has lead to clear improvements.

 

The winner of the ‘Sustainability’ award was Birmingham New Hospital Joint Venture, made up of a partnership between Balfour Beatty Construction Limited and Haden Young Limited. The winner was honoured for its systematic and sustained application of shared UK principles to construction and development and clarity of thought about the total impact of the development/construction process on sustainability.

George Marsh, WMCCE Chairman said: “These awards reward and recognise outstanding organisations across the region. This year entries were of an extremely high standard and I congratulate all the winners and finalists”.

Celebrating Construction was co-hosted by Birmingham City Council’s Building Consultancy service, the Chartered Institute of Building’s (CIOB) West Midlands branch and WMCCE.

The event also incorporated Building Consultancy’s eleventh annual Built in Quality and Quality in Demolition Awards, which reward excellent work in both construction and demolition projects. These awards were presented by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Chauhdry Abdul Rashid JP.

The event was sponsored by the Homes and Communities Agency; the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB); Advantage Offsite; the University of Wolverhampton; Construction Skills; and Business Link West Midlands.

WMCCE is part-funded by Advantage West Midlands and the European Regional Development Fund. The Centre is supported by the University of Wolverhampton. It offers subsidised business improvement services which aim to help companies increase productivity, improve business processes, implement innovative technologies, adopt best practice and train the workforce.
